A section of the M42 was shut down in both directions on Friday evening after police responded to a tragic incident between Junctions 1 and 2. Emergency services were called to the motorway following reports that an individual had taken their own life on the carriageway.
The closure affected the stretch between the M5 and Junction 2, bringing traffic to a complete standstill. Drivers caught within the closure were advised to remain in their vehicles and await instructions from police and emergency responders.
By 6:43 p.m., authorities confirmed that trapped traffic had been released in both directions, though the motorway remained closed while officers conducted further investigation.
National Highways issued multiple statements urging motorists to avoid the area:
- “ The M42 is CLOSED in both directions between the M5 and J2 due to a police incident.”
- “Avoid M42 Southbound between J1 & J2. Standstill traffic.”
The disruption caused severe delays, with congestion stretching more than four miles near the Bournville area.
Police have not disclosed additional details, and the motorway is expected to fully reopen once emergency and recovery operations are complete.
