Person Dies After Jumping From Del Mar Heights Bridge, Interstate 5 Northbound Closed

San Diego, CA — Authorities are investigating after a person died following a jump from the Del Mar Heights Bridge on Interstate 5 on Friday, prompting a full closure of northbound lanes.

The incident occurred around 12:45 p.m. near the Del Mar Heights Road exit, according to the San Diego Police Department (SDPD). Police confirmed that officers were responding to a person on the overpass, which led to the closure of all northbound lanes of I-5 in the area.

  • Northbound traffic is being diverted off at Del Mar Heights Road.

Incident Details

Law enforcement agencies responding to the scene included the San Diego Police, California Highway Patrol, EMS, and multiple ambulances. Officials reported that the individual was standing on the bridge and threatening to jump. Despite repeated commands from officers to come down, the person refused and stated that they would jump if anyone approached.

Tragically, the individual jumped from the bridge onto the freeway below. Emergency personnel immediately initiated CPR, but the person was pronounced dead at the scene. The individual’s identity has not been released.

The SDPD and Caltrans/CHP have advised drivers to seek alternate routes while the freeway remains shut. Officials have not released additional details regarding the individual’s identity or the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A spokesperson from SDPD thanked the public for their patience as emergency services and investigators work at the scene.

  1. Where the hell was the mental health emergency team!!!!! You fucking idiots!!!! The city of San Diego has completely failed this individual!!!! I made eye contact with him while driving the opposite direction and knew the team he had around him was unequipped to help him. I wish they would have let me intervene. I’m more than heartbroken, I’m freaking pissed he lost his life today.
