St. John’s, NL — Capital Auto Group has announced with great sadness that its President and Founder, Frank Howard, passed away on December 4, surrounded by his family, following a courageous battle with cancer.

For more than five decades, Frank Howard was a driving force in Newfoundland and Labrador’s business landscape, particularly within the automotive sector. From modest beginnings and a single dealership, he expanded his vision into what is now Capital Auto Group—a thriving organization representing 10 automotive brands and employing more than 500 people. His entrepreneurial achievements also extended to The Howard Group, which oversees a substantial real estate portfolio under Howard Properties.

Howard’s leadership style—marked by integrity, determination, and an unwavering commitment to excellence—earned him widespread respect and numerous accolades. Among them were the prestigious CADA Laureate Award for Ambassadorship and his recent induction into the Junior Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador (JANL) Business Hall of Fame, a testament to his lasting influence on the province’s economic and business development.

Yet, those who knew Frank say his greatest legacy may lie beyond business. Deeply rooted in his community, he believed that true success was measured not only by professional accomplishments but by one’s ability to give back. His philanthropic efforts touched countless organizations, including the Health Care Foundation, Daffodil Place, Janeway Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, and The Gathering Place, among many others. Through decades of generosity, he helped strengthen critical services and support systems across Newfoundland and Labrador—leaving a compassionate legacy that will continue to benefit families for years to come.

At the centre of Frank Howard’s world was his family. He shared a devoted partnership with his beloved wife, Annette, and found immeasurable joy in his children—Jon (Kristy), Jordan, Mike (Maria), and Nick (Sukriti)—as well as his grandchildren: Logan, Madden, Molly, and Roman. His happiest moments were those spent together, and his love for his family guided both his personal and professional life.

The Howard family has extended heartfelt gratitude to their relatives, friends, and the healthcare teams at the Health Sciences Centre and The Ottawa Hospital for their compassion and support during Frank’s illness.

In keeping with Frank’s wishes, there will be no wake or formal funeral service. Instead, a celebration of life will be announced in the near future to honour his remarkable legacy.

Frank Howard leaves behind not only a successful business empire, but a profound impact on his industry, his community, and the many people whose lives he enriched. His vision, generosity, and dedication will continue to inspire future generations.
